Romelu Lukaku says he will retire from international football after Euro 2020
Belgium’s players laughed at Romelu Lukaku’s suggestion that he will retire from international football after the European Championship in 2020, according to Vincent Kompany. Following Belgium’s World Cup campaign this summer, the Manchester United striker claimed that he plans to step down after the tournament in less than two years’ time. Lukaku would be just 27 if he followed through with his promise to step away from international football. But Kompany has vowed to convince Lukaku, who has 43 goals in 77 games for his country, to remain available. ‘I can hardly imagine that I’m going to have a lot of trouble convincing him to go even further,’ said Kompany. Lukaku has scored 43 goals in 77 appearances for Belgium ‘Young players sometimes say things that they later regret. ‘We all laughed at it. ‘When Romme stops, I will pick him up at his home in Manchester and I will take him to Brussels. He does not live too far from me.’ Thibaut Courtois also doubted that Lukaku will follow through with his decision to retire after Euro 2020. ‘Do I believe him? Not really, but you never know, of course,’ said the Real Madrid goalkeeper. ‘An attacker like Lukaku works very hard and has little rest.
That weighs in time. ‘But if we were to win the European Championship, I can not imagine that he will stop. It would be very unfortunate.’
