The current antics of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the self-proclaimed leader of the illusory Biafra Republic, brings to mind an often quoted remark by Karl Marx, who pointed out in reference to the 9th November 1799 coup d’etat by Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte in France:
A woman holds a Biafran flag during a service at the St. Martin Catholic of Tours Church on May 28, 2017 in the Aba-South district in Aba. The Nigerian civil war’s 50th anniversary will be commemorated on May 30. The war was triggered when the Igbo people, the main ethnic group in the southeast, declared an independent breakaway state, the Republic of Biafra. / AFP PHOTO “History often repeats itself, the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce…” As if to illustrate this thought-provoking adage afresh, post-colonial Nigerian history, which first produced the immense tragedy of Biafra with its horrible litany of death and widespread destruction, is now going on to provide the world with a new version of Biafra that is being preached by the colorful duo of Ralph Uwazurike (MASSOB) and Nnamdi Kanu (IPOB). In the original historical version of Biafra, the world witnessed General Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu strutting pompously across the stage of history in a crisply starched military uniform, proclaiming for all to hear that “no power in Black Africa” would ever stop Biafra from coming into being. And now we have a fresh enactment of the Biafran tragedy, this time as farce, with Ralph Uwazurike issuing bogus ‘Aba-made’ Biafran passports to gullible youths willing to believe that an adventurer posing as a Head of State can be trusted to “actualize” the Biafran mirage, while his erstwhile employee Nnamdi Kanu has now suddenly morphed from a fire-breathing bush fighter into the self-ordained rabbi of a bizarre new Jewish religious cult. Let us hope that this new prophet can now be left in peace to lead his fellow Biafrans to much deserved freedom from the hellish confines of the oppressive Nigerian nation. Thankfully, the process will probably be swift, since Nnamdi Kanu apparently has very deep pockets, as well as unparalleled access to top political leaders in Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra and Abia States. Interestingly enough, a three-page spread that was published in the “Sunday Sun” of December 12th 2015 (pages 48-51) threw some very interesting light on what Ralph Uwazurike has been up to with MASSOB, as well as on who the mysterious Nnamdi Kanu actually is.
If indeed Nnamdi Kanu is who Ralph Uwazurike says he is, how did he suddenly become endowed with the tremendous level of funding that appears to have been required to rent large crowds for the unruly demonstrations all over the Eastern states, as well as in Delta and Rivers States? How was he able to fund a secret radio station within the confines of Nigeria, as well as purchase considerable quantities of sophisticated weapons in preparation for an armed uprising? Hopefully, the answer to these and many more questions may become known when and if Nnamdi Kanu and his alleged co-conspirators are eventually put on trial. In the meantime, fellow Nigerians and Ndigbo who have a sense of humor will probably enjoy the free cinema show of Nnamdi Kanu’s efforts to spread his new Jewish faith among the faithful that he has gathered in his father’s compound, clad in white priestly robes, and brandishing a highly symbolic fan artfully decorated with Biafran colors in a bid to demonstrate the nexus between the resurrected Biafra and the mythical Jerusalem that Donald Trump is apparently getting set to proclaim as the heavenly ordained capital of the State of Israel. Turning now to the possible remedy that might help quell the ongoing agitation for the birth of a Biafran nation, there have been a number of calls in the recent past for some kind of “dialogue” with Nnamdi Kanu and his followers. This kind of advice is obviously misplaced, notwithstanding the rather bizarre utterances of Bishop Kukah, who once described Nnamdi Kanu as “the most popular politician in Nigeria today”! If there can be no “negotiation” or “dialogue” with Nnamdi Kanu and his supporters, is there any means of diffusing the present unrest, short of engaging in a shooting war with the neo-Biafran agitators? Obviously, the best solution would be for the Federal Government to publicly announce that it is prepared to grant a Biafran homeland to all Ndigbo who wish to abandon the choice properties and flourishing business enterprises that they have acquired by dint of back-breaking labor and intense sacrifice over many decades in Lagos, Abuja, Benin, Jos, Maiduguri, etc. and return to Nnewi or wherever else they may choose to relocate to in a newly independent Biafran enclave. Naturally, the returnees would be unable to carry buildings or other major physical assets with them, so they would be limited to whatever they might be able to fit into a few suitcases and “Ghana must go bags,” with assistance from Eze Ayodele Fayose 1, the newly crowned paramount ruler of Ihiala. Furthermore, the new Biafran nation would be a landlocked enclave with no access to oil, since no rational indigenes of Akwa Ibom, Cross Rivers, Bayelsa and Rivers States can be expected to associate themselves with the highly illogical caper of the newly proclaimed Biafran nation, a factor that happens to have been one of the underlying causes of the collapse of the original Biafra under the leadership of the late Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu. It would appear that Ralph Uwazurike, Nnamdi Kanu and the bulk of their hard-core followers are apparently too young to be aware of the deep-rooted reasons for the disastrous collapse of the original Biafra! Furthermore, once they have returned to Arochwukwu, Umuahia Ibeku, Aba-Ngwa, etc., the citizens of the newly independent “Biafra” should be required to produce passports and legitimate visas each time they wish to visit any part of whatever is left of the dismembered Nigerian nation for business or pleasure, with strict customs controls to regulate the movement of goods and foodstuffs between the new Biafra and every other part of present day Nigeria. IPOB has lashed out at Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, over comments alleged to be anti-Biafra - The pro-Biafra group says Obasanjo cannot ask it to jettison its secessionist ideologies - IPOB says plots by Obj and his cohorts to silence their movement, will not work - The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has faulted former President Olusegun Obasanjo's call, urging the group to jettison its secessionist struggle Obasanjo has in a recent statemenurged pro-Biafra agitators to bury their agitation and fight for the ‘national cake’. In a press statement signed by its media and publicity secretary, Mr Emma Powerful, IPOB said it was not interested in the so called ‘national cake’. The group said it wondered why elders in the mold of Obasanjo could not tell the truth about the injustices faced by Igbos in Nigeria.

Following her visit to see the leader of the IPOB, Katrin Gaensles, a foreign journalist has visited the site where weapons used by Biafran soldiers were displayed. The Deutsche journalist and writer was taken around Owerri, Imo state to observe the weapons. Her tour guide was Nnamdi Kanu’s brother, Prince Meme. Gaensles had earlier paid a visit to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, at his Afara Ukwu home in Abia state, before visiting the site where the weapons used during the Biafran war were displayed.

North Korea launched a ballistic missile test Monday, its third in a little over three weeks. The short-range ballistic missile traveled an estimated 248 miles, splashing down within Japan's exclusive economic zone, an area of sea where commercial ships are known to operate, according to statements from both the Japanese government and the South Korean military. South Korea and Japan immediately issued strong protests, with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe promising "concrete action" in response to the test, and South Korean defense chiefs saying the North would face "strong punishment from our military." What it's really like to be inside North Korea What it's really like to be inside North Korea 01:40 North Korea has fired 12 missiles during nine tests so far in 2017 Analysts say all of North Korea's tests, successful or not, provide information that help bring it closer to its goal of building a missile that could reach the US. That the missile landed within 200 nautical miles of the Japanese coast was an "extremely problematic act for the safety of airplanes and ships" Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said in a statement. The launch, read the statement, "is clearly violating the UN resolution. The repeated provocative acts by North Korea is absolutely not acceptable." The Japanese Prime Minister said a "firm protest" was lodged with North Korea and that Tokyo would take action "together with the United States." Analysts say Japan's options for dealing with North Korea unilaterally are limited. Tokyo couldn't carry out a military response alone, said Carl Schuster, a Hawaii Pacific University professor and former director of operations at the US Pacific Command's Joint Intelligence Center. "Japan lacks the ballistic missiles, intelligence, targeting and reconnaissance assets, or electronic warfare and air defense suppression capability required to carry out any effective military response," Schuster said. However, Japan could do some things that might hurt North Korea economically, he said, such as stopping and searching North Korean merchant and fishing vessels in Japanese waters. No red lines The government of South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who took office in early May and who has advocated dialogue with the North, condemned Monday's launch. "It is a severe threat to the peace and stability of not only the Korean Peninsula, but also the international community," said a statement from South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "Since our new government took office, North Korea has been frequently and repeatedly conducting provocation in such manner. This is in direct opposition to our demands in regards to the denuclearization and peace of the Korean Peninsula." "North Korea's continuous provocative actions will cause its own isolation and it will be facing strong punishment from our military, South Korea and US alliance and the international community," a statement from South Korea's Joint Chiefs said. Despite that rhetoric, the allies have not given North Korea any "red lines" which it cannot cross or face a military strike, said Adam Mount, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress. "If they're not clear on what they are attempting to deter, they're not going to have the effect they desire," Mount said. Even if a military response was considered, the repercussions could be catastrophic. "If this goes to a military solution, it is going to be tragic on an unbelievable scale," US Defense Secretary James Mattis said earlier this month. Any pre-emptive military strike on North Korea would put South Korean and Japanese civilian populations, as well as US military installations within those countries, at risk for a North Korean counterstrike. Some estimates put 25 million civilians at risk in the Seoul metropolitan area alone.

North Korea has fired what appears to be a short-range Scud missile off its east coast, South Korea's military has said.

The missile was launched from around the eastern North Korean coastal town of Wonsan, the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. It flew about 280 miles (450km) before landing in the sea in Japan's exclusive maritime economic zone. There were no immediate reports of damage to planes or vessels in the area. Japan's chief cabinet secretary, Yoshihide Suga, said the launch was "a clear violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions". He added: "Japan absolutely cannot tolerate North Korea's repeated provocative actions. We have strongly protested to North Korea and condemn its actions in the strongest terms."https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlIPGMSDfm7RnHX-i4lwpPnyzMd1tykg__e1tLXiNfu3X1kcDM60zReT1CxQw_eAgdhNdzlJliie1IwwfIy2N64LzhNP688MLQ4T-bCt3vI0WHDczjMyb2tMftnOBoS9hGlKRvSQn0g8Ub/s1600/sssss.jpgThe White House said President Donald Trump has been briefed about the launch. There was no immediate comment from the North's state controlled media.

However, Western experts believe Pyongyang is a few years away from successfully developing such a weapon. North Korea's defiant ballistic missile tests have created tensions with Washington in recent months. The reclusive nation has continued with its programme despite painful UN and unilateral sanctions - and described such punishment as an infringement of its right to self-defence. Pyongyang maintains nuclear weapons are necessary to counter US aggression, but America denies it has any intention to attack the North

Europe can no longer "completely depend" on the US and UK following the election of President Trump and Brexit, German Chancellor Angela Merkel says.

Mrs Merkel said she wanted friendly relations with both countries as well as Russia but Europe now had to "fight for its own destiny". Her comments come after Mr Trump refused to re-commit to the 2015 Paris climate deal at the G7 summit. Mrs Merkel is on the campaign trail ahead of elections in September"The times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out. I've experienced that in the last few days," Mrs Merkel told a crowd at an election rally in Munich, southern Germany. The relationship between Berlin and new French President Emmanuel Macron had to be a priority, Mrs Merkel said, adding: "We Europeans have to take our destiny into our own hands."

On Saturday, the German leader had described climate change talks at the G7 group of rich nations as "very unsatisfactory". Leaders from the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan had re-affirmed their support for the Paris accord - but Mr Trump said he would make a decision in the coming week. Mr Trump has previously pledged to abandon the Paris deal, and expressed doubts about climate change. Speaking in Brussels last week, Mr Trump also told Nato members to spend more money on defence and did not re-state his administration's commitment to Nato's mutual security guarantees. i

The Ohanaeze Youth Council, OYC, Friday, visited the leader of ‎the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

On the delegation were OYC President, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Deputy President, Arthur Obiora, secretary general, Okwu Nnabuike among others.

Speaking on the essence of the visit, Isiguzoro said they had come to hail Kanu over his doggedness in championing the course of Ndigbo.

“We are here to thank God that at last freedom came your way; we have followed your activities with keen interest and appreciate all the efforts you have made, including sacrificing your personal freedom for the good of our people.

“On the sit-at-home‎ being planned by the IPOB as part of activities to mark Biafra, 50 years after, the Ohanaeze youths are solidly behind you.

“We are calling on Ndigbo both at home and in the Diaspora to join the IPOB in observing the sit-at-home. Our people should see it as a time to honour those who paid the supreme price in their quest for the emancipation of Ndigbo.”

Earlier, the OYC Deputy President and the secretary general, Mazi Arthur Obiora and Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, respectively, described Kanu as the new Igbo leader.

‎According to Arthur, “this visit was borne out of the fact that we now have in you a new Igbo leader. You have indeed stepped out to wear the shoes left by Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

“We hail your courage, dexterity and plead with you to steer on leading the struggle for the emancipation of Ndigbo.”

Responding, Kanu appreciated the OYC for being part of the key struggle towards his release from prison.

The IPOB leader, who described himself as a youth, pledged to work with the Ohanaeze youths in the onerous task of liberating Ndigbo.

UMAHI ..Say Nigeria can still be one ..Ask IPOB to reconsider sit-at-home order By Peter Okutu After many weeks of speculations and castigation against the alleged silence of the South East Governors’ Forum concerning the agitation for Biafran state as well as the release of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, the forum, Friday broke its silence about the agitation and other sundry issues surrounding Biafra. From right, Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu); Dave Umahi (Ebonyi); Rochas Okorocha (Imo); and Willie Obiano (Anambra) during a meeting of the South East Governors Forum at the Government House, Enugu, yesterday. In a statement issued in Abakaliki, the Chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief David Umahi called for calm and wisdom in the ongoing agitation for Biafran state, adding that Nigeria could still be one. Governor Umahi, contrary to allegation that theGovernors’  Forum did not play any role towards the release of Nnamdi Kanu disclosed that the South East Governors made various moves and met with relevant authorities to secure the release of the IPOB leader. He called for caution on the planned sit at home by the IPOB, saying “the South East governors are fully aware of the saturation of various information with the call by the leaders of movements known as IPOB agitation for secession from the Federal Republic of Nigeria and formation of Sovereign state of Biafra. It would be a tragic dereliction of our collective responsibility as leaders, if we fail to take a clear and definitive stand at this potentially explosive movement in history of Ndigbo.” He said the forum was not unaware or unmindful of the historical and contemporary issues that have served as incitement and stimulation for the apparent crisis in the  Nigerian system by the Igbo youths and appealed to members of IPOB and other groups to stop actions that might plunge the zone into irredeemable crisis. Governor Umahi further disclosed that South East zone cannot afford to take action that will do nothing but retard progress of the zone. He also called on all security agencies in the zone to liaise with the South East Governors’ Forum and South South to find amicable resolution to the matter and maintained that 30th May will come and like any other day people should conduct themselves in a peaceful manner.

IFEANYI UBAH-TWO COURTS GIVE CONFLICTING RULING

IFEANYI UBAH-TWO COURTS GIVE CONFLICTING RULING

…Abuja court gives DSS nod courts of coordinate jurisdiction, yesterday, gave contradictory rulings on Chief Executive Officer of Capital Oil and Gas Ltd, Chief Ifeanyi Ubah.

While a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting at Jabi granted the Department of State Services, DSS, the nod to hold him for another 14 days, a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos  ordered the DSS to release him within 48 hours.

Ifeanyi Ubah
Justice Yusuf Halilu extended the detention order following an ex-parte application the DSS filed through its lawyer, Mr. G.O.A. Agbadua.

The agency said it filed the application considering that an earlier order the court  granted it on May 10, elapsed on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Ubah’s lawyer, Mrs Ifeoma Esom, has filed a fresh application asking the court to compel the DSS to release her client on administrative bail.

It will be recalled that the security agency had in a counter-affidavit it filed before the court, alleged that Ubah committed  economic sabotage punishable by death.

The DSS, while opposing an application that sought to vacate the remand order it secured against Ubah, stated in the counter-affidavit deposed by one of its operatives, Mr. Safwan Bello, that the PMS Ubah diverted was valued at N11 billion.

It averred that several efforts by the NNPC to recover the PMS it kept in Ubah’s tank farm failed as the applicant had converted it to his personal use.

However, Ubah’s lawyer, Esom, has accused the DSS of surreptitiously securing an order to detain her client.

Esom alleged that the agency suppressed material facts when on May 10, it persuaded the court to allow it to hold Ubah in its custody for 14 days.

Another court orders his release within 48 hours

However, a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, in its ruling ordered the Director-General of DSS to release unconditionally, Dr Ubah, within 48 hours or charge him to court.

Trial judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, in a fundamental right suit by Ubah, held that his detention without charge violated his rights. Ubah had asked the court to  order his release.

The court also noted that the DSS lied on oath in a bid to justify Ubah’s illegal detention, as he (Ubah) was arrested in Lagos and flown to Abuja, contrary to DSS averement that he (Ubah) was arrested in Abuja.

Acording to the court,“the deponent to the fourth and fifth respondents, therefore, clearly lied in the face of Exhibit SSS1. This is unfortunate. It is unfortunate because the deponent is counsel on record for the aforementioned respondents.

“Counsel should at all times be honest and truthful to the court and must always avoid uttering or engaging in falsehood. He is under a solemn duty not to seek to confuse the court.

“Counsel is under a duty to show great respect to the court by not lying. This is because deliberate falsehood towards the judge may not only earn such counsel professional censure but he may even be committed for contempt in facie curiae.

“Counsel is a under a duty to say the truth at all times and not be economical with the truth.”

The 100-page judgment by Justice Idris further held that Section 41 of the Constitution and Article 12 of the African Charter guarantee to every Nigerian the right to move freely, warning that there would be dire consequences if the government continues to violate human rights.

He said: “Consequently, the following orders are hereby made: An order is hereby made directing the DG of SSS and the DSS to, within 48 hours of the judgment of the court in this action, initiate or institute a criminal action against the applicants herein before any court of competent jurisdiction if they have committed any crime against the state.

“An order is hereby made directing the DG of SSS and the DSS to release the first applicant from detention unconditionally if no criminal action is instituted against him within 48 hours of this judgment.

“The first respondent, being the Attorney-General of the Federation, shall ensure strict and due compliance with the judgment  of this court. That is the judgment of the court.”

Labour begs Osinbajo to wade in

Also, yesterday, the  Lagos State Council of United Labour Congress of Nigeria, ULC, pleaded with the Federal Government, especially the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, to wade into the dispute betweenUbah and DSS, to save the jobs of over 2000 workers.

In a statement by its chairman and secretary, Tokunbo Korodo and John Odigie, respectively, ULC lamented that Ubah’s continued incarceration was undermining the job security of over 2,000 employees of the company, recalling that one of the promises of the government was job creation.

According to the statement, “the continued detention of the chief executive of Capital Oil and Gas Limited without having been found guilty of the purported offence by a competent court of law smacks of a vendetta, aimed at crippling the management of Capital Oil and Gas Limited and by extension, the security of the jobs of over 2000 workers in their employment.”

“Our findings reveal that this was not the first time the NNPC and the Capital Oil and Gas Ltd would do business of this magnitude together. If this is a case of a breach of contract, it should be treated as such with respect to law and due process, with regard to negotiating terms of settlement and saving the jobs of over 2000 workers including Tanker drivers and other auxiliary workers within the depot.

We are also mindful of the fact that the same company, over three years ago rescued the nation from perennial fuel scarcity when other independent marketers refused to import petroleum product or hoard same, due to issue with government over payment of subsidy on petroleum products. We are using this medium to appeal to federal Government to release the chairman of capital Oil and Gas Ltd Chief Ifeanyi Ubah to pave good grounds for negotiation with the management of Capital Oil Ltd with a view to resolving all disagreement and save the Jobs of workers and the business in this depot for the interest of Nigeria Oil sector and for Nigerians.”

PaNIC and tension overwhelmed Epe area of Lagos, yesterday, as gunmen suspected to be militants stormed Lagos State Model Junior and Secondary College, Igbonla, Epe, and abducted two principals and six male students.
Parents and relatives of students immediately thronged the school in panic to ascertain the identities of those that were abducted and to withdraw their children and wards. Relatives of staff and students of the school were seen in state of confusion as the school authorities were yet to reveal the identity of those kidnapped.
By the time of going to press last night, the kidnappers were yet to establish contact with either the school or the parents of the abducted students.
Yesterday’s attack was the second time militants were abducting teachers and students in the school. The first attack was in January.
In the current kidnap, the hoodlums came through the Imeru/Iji waterways in three boats and bored a hole through the school’s fence to gain entrance to the premises.
The gunmen stormed first the assembly ground, shooting sporadically into the air, and commanded everyone to remain still.
It was reported that some of the courageous students and staff took to their heels, while others stood still.
Daily Sun gathered that six students and two teachers were abducted and taken away by the hoodlums, who escaped the same way they came.
The identities of the kidnapped students were not released for security reasons last night, but the names of the teachers were given as Bolaji Oyesola, the principal of the Junior Secondary School and Akinrinmade of the Senior Secondary School.
A resident, John Busari, told Daily Sun that the militants had written to the school that they would visit again, after the first abduction in January.
According to him, “I don’t know whether the school management informed the police or not. There is tension in Epe now, because during the last school abduction, the police claimed they had put adequate security in place around schools within riverine areas. This recent abduction has exposed the police that they are not providing adequate security in the area.
“We are on our own, because many people have been kidnapped in our area in recent times. The Baale is still in the hands of kidnappers who are demanding a N20 million ransom.”
Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, who confirmed the story,  said only six students were kidnapped. He said the  police were on the trail of the militants.
He said: “Today, at about 0500hrs, pirates/kidnappers gained entrance into Igbonla Model School, Igbonla, near Epe, and abducted six students. Investigation and rescue operations have commenced with the visit to the affected school by a police team, led by me.
“From the visit, it was found that the criminal elements used the Imeru/Iji waterways to access the swampy forest bordering the school, bored a hole on a part of the school fence to gain entrance. The dastardly act of the criminal elements is nothing other than sheer wickedness as there is no justification whatsoever to abduct innocent children.
“The trauma of parents/guardians and relatives of the innocent children can be imagined, we, however, appeal for calm to enable security agencies focus on rescue operations and apprehension of the suspects.
“The police and other security agencies will intensify all necessary measures towards ensuring safety and security of the good people of Lagos.  We will appreciate useful information from members of the public, please.”
As at the time of filing this report, parents and relatives of students of the school were trooping to the school to ascertain the identities of those kidnapped.
A guardian, Madam Mercy Ukagbue, told Daily Sun: “My younger sister’s son is in the school. I have come to find out how he is faring. Well, we have not been briefed by the school management. You can see that everybody is confused because we don’t know who is among those abducted.”
Daily Sun investigation revealed  that, a  few days ago, a Baale in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area was kidnapped.
The Baale is still in the den of his captors, as N20 million ransom has been demanded for his release.
As at press time, a combined team of marine police and Navy were combing the creeks around the area. A police source said the police were making efforts to contact the Nigerian Air Force to assist in combing the creeks.
Meanwhile, two weeks ago, police in Lagos arrested a pharmacist over his suspected involvement in the kidnap of his boss, one Donatus Duru, owner of a multi-national pharmaceutical company in Ilupeju area of Lagos State.
The businessman was abducted close to his office in Ilupeju on February 14, 2017, and taken to a hideout, after which his abductors demanded €1 million for his release.
The family later paid N150 million, but the kidnappers insisted on the complete ransom, failing which they would kill him.
Similarly, two months ago, a student of Caleb University was abducted from his Epe, Lagos residence.
The kidnappers had contacted the family to demand N100 million as ransom, an amount the family said was outrageous.
  • In January, a Lieutenant of the Nigerian Army, Diya, was kidnapped along Badagry road in Lagos while the Nigerian/Turkish college, Isheri, a boundary town between Lagos and Ogun States was invaded by militants who abducted eight persons, including staff and students. All the victims were released after ransom were paid.

Ahead of his administration’s second year anniversary, Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, yesterday stirred celebration across the state as he inaugurated 26 development projects executed by his administration.

The projects, sited mostly in rural areas were among the 35 flagged off simultaneously late last year across the 17 local government areas, in line with the administration’s vision to open up the rural areas to create more urban centres for socio-economic growth.

Inaugurating the projects, which comprised 20 roads construction, two rural electrification, four boreholes, Ugwuanyi, who was represented at the various sites by members of the State Executive Council, stated that the events were another practical demonstration of his administration’s determination and capacity to fulfil its promises to the people, despite severe economic constraints facing the country.

The governor appreciated the support and enthusiasm of the people of the state, who trooped out to witness the events and reassured them of his administration’s commitment to deliver more dividends of democracy.

He noted that the projects were identified and specified by stakeholders of the respective host communities, adding that “by the grace of God and to His eternal glory, we are here, eight months later, to celebrate the completion of these projects and simultaneously commission them for the use and enjoyment of our people in all the local government areas of the state.”

According to him, “on October 15, 2016 and in fulfilment of the promise of the state government to execute a development project worth at least N100 million in each of the 17 local government areas of Enugu State, we simultaneously flagged off the execution of vital projects such as roads, water, electricity and others.”

The governor thanked members of the  state assembly for their support and cooperation towards the actualisation of the projects and also expressed gratitude to stakeholders, council chairmen, contractors and various host communities for their understanding, solidarity and commitment to the successful completion of the projects.

The events drew praises from visibly elated members of the host communities who eulogised the governor for his vision in bringing development to their areas and giving them a sense of belonging.

The Special Adviser to the President on Economic Matters, Dr. Adeyemi Dipeolu stated this is in a statement while releasing the The 2017 Q1 GDP figures. He said that there was a turnaround in the manufacturing and non-oil sectors, adding that there was also an increasing reduction in the sectoral negative growth. The statement made available to State House correspondents read thus: “The latest figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics show that the economy shrank by 0.52% in the first quarter of 2017 (Q1 2017). “Although the economy remains in recession this is the strongest performance in five quarters and shows a significant turnaround from the low of -2.34% reached in the third quarter of 2016 (Q

“This is nearly two percentage point improvement and also reflects the fact that the number of sub-sectors that experienced negative growth has almost halved falling from 29 sub-sectors for the whole of 2016 to 16 sub-sectors in Q1 2017. “Agricultural growth remained in positive territory albeit growing at a slower rate of about 3.4%, no doubt due to seasonal factors. “Growth in manufacturing on the other hand returned to positive territory after five quarters of negative growth. It grew by 1.36% in Q1 2017 after falling to a nadir of -7.0% in Q1 2016. “The solid mineral sector continued to justify the priority given to it by the Federal Government with high double digit growth for metal ores and quarrying at 40.79% and 52.54% respectively. “Growth in the oil sector remained negative at -11.64% although there was an over six percentage point improvement in its fortunes from the previous quarter. “More significantly, the non-oil sector which accounts for about 90% of GDP returned to positive growth although at a marginal level of 0.72% in Q1 2017. This is the first positive growth in the non-oil src="https://jumia.com/affiliate-program/banners/Jumia Nigeria/Smart Shopper - Laptops/320X100.jpg"/> sector since the last quarter of 2015. “Headline inflation fell for the third month in a row to 17.24%, with core inflation also declining quite rapidly. “However, food inflation remains of concern as it continues to trend upwards. This is mainly due to rising transport costs and other structural impediments to the movement of foods in the domestic market. The trade balance remained positive reflecting import contraction and relatively higher export revenues which grew year-on-year by up to 80.5%

“The overall picture that the figures show is that the economy is emerging slowly out of recession. “This outlook is reinforced by positive trends in other indicators such as improved oil prices and increasing production, rising foreign exchange reserves, increased capital spending by the Federal src="https://jumia.com/affiliate-program/banners/Jumia Nigeria/Smart Shopper - Smartphones/320X100.jpg"/> src="https://jumia.com/affiliate-program/banners/Jumia Nigeria/Smart Shopper - Womens Fashion/300X250.jpg"/> %2Fplay.google.com%2Fstore%2Fapps%2Fdetails%3Fid%3Dcom.jumia.android%26hl%3Den&utm_source=cake&utm_medium=affiliation&utm_campaign=34923&utm_term=">Government as well as improved perceptions reflected in various purchasing and sales managers indices. “Barring major economic shocks, it should still be possible to restore growth this year as projected in the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan.”

No juicing or blending required.Suzanne SomersThe suicide bomber who brought carnage to the Manchester Arena has been named as Salman Abedi. Monday night's attack at a concert by US pop star Ariana Grande left 22 people dead, including an eight-year-old girl, and dozens injured. Theresa May raised Britain's terror threat level from severe to critical and said the military could be deployed to support armed police officers at public events. Abedi, believed to have been born in Manchester and of Libyan descent, studied business at Salford University but dropped out before completing his degree.
Abedi, who was reportedly known to the security services, is thought to have returned from Libya as recently as this week. A school friend told The Times: "He went to Libya three weeks ago and came back recently, like days ago." The 22-year-old is thought to have attended the Manchester Islamic Centre, also known as Didsbury Mosque, along with his parents and siblings. A family friend, who asked not to be named, described him as "normal" and said they were known to the Libyan community in the city. He said: "He was always friendly, nothing to suggest (he was violent). He was normal, to be honest." How the Manchester terror attack unfolded 02:21

Abedi was named after armed officers carried out a raid on the red brick semi in south Manchester where he was registered as living. Greater Manchester Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said detectives were working to establish whether he was working alone or as part of a networkResidents were ordered to stay inside as around 20 police swooped on a house in Elsmore Road in Fallowfield carrying out a controlled explosion on the front door. The Islamic State terror group claimed responsibility for the barbaric attack, which involved a home-made device packed with nuts and bolts which exploded in the venue's foyer as thousands of young people were leaving. Mrs May said the perpetrator had chosen the time and place of his attack deliberately to cause "maximum carnage and to kill and injure indiscriminately". She flew to Manchester to speak to police chiefs and medics treating some of the child victims.
Crowds of people gathered in the city centre on Tuesday evening, standing together in an act of solidarity and spilling from Albert Square onto nearby roads. The death of Saffie Rose Roussos, the youngest known victim of the attack, was described by her headteacher as "heartbreaking". Chris Upton, of Tarleton Community Primary School, said: "Saffie was simply a beautiful little girl in every aspect of the word." for further details visithttp://http//www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/05/23/manchester-arena-attack-22-killed-suicide-bomber-ariana-grande
