Liverpool have been brilliant in the attacking third this season but at the back, they have been vulnerable under the management of Jurgen Klopp. In the upcoming January transfer window, the Reds must sign a top center half but more importantly, they have to sign a solid defensive midfielder. Since the departure of Javier Mascherano in 2010, the Merseysiders have badly missed a strong play breaker, who could provide a solid cover in front of the back line.
At the moment, skipper Jordan Henderson is Liverpool’s main holding midfielder but the issue is that the England international is not a specialist play breaker and must be replaced. In my opinion, Liverpool have to secure the signing of Portuguese international and Sporting CP defensive midfielder William Carvalho. The Seleccao star is a specialist holding midfielder, who has impressed in the Primeira Liga over the years and he has been a top player for the national side as well. He was a key member of the Portugal team that lifted the European Championships trophy last year. At the moment, under the management of Jorge Jesus, he is the captain of Sporting CP, who are level on points with league leaders Porto this season. The 25-year-old star’s current deal with the Portuguese club will expire in 2020 and it has a release clause of €45million (A Bola).
