Chelsea have announced the loan signing of Mateo Kovacic from Real Madrid. As confirmed on the club’s official website, the Croatian midfielder will spend a season with the Blues, who reportedly have the option to sign the player permanently at the end of the deal.
The La Liga side offered the player to Chelsea as a sweetener in the deal to take Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid.
We have tonight agreed terms with Real Madrid for the transfer of Thibaut Courtois, subject to the agreement of personal terms and a medical. As part of the deal, Mateo Kovacic will join Chelsea on a season-long loan.
The Belgian shot-stopper was widely expected to move to La Liga this summer, but the Blues were digging their heels in until a replacement was signed.
Kovacic has made his feelings clear at Madrid. He wanted to move on this summer after falling out of favour.
