Manchester City maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a hard-fought win against Newcastle thanks to goals from Raheem Sterling and Kyle Walker.
They say the best teams manage to win when they are not at their best, and that was certainly the case for Manchester City yesterday. City struggled to break down a resilient Newcastle side, who cancelled out Raheem Sterling's fine goal with a break-away equaliser through DeAndre Yedlin. It took a sweet 30-yard strike from Kyle Walker to get the win on a day when City's fluid attacking players couldn't quite hit their stride. One man missing from the matchday squad completely was Leroy Sane. After the game, Pep Guardiola confirmed that Sane's omission was not down to injury or illness. Instead, Guardiola simply said the German was left out because City had too many attacking options.
Sane has played just 30 minutes of Premier League football this season, with players like Sterling, Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez seemingly in front of him in the pecking order at the moment.
De Bruyne injury latest
The Daily Star report that Kevin De Bruyne’s rehabilitation from the knee injury he suffered could be completed sooner than Man City originally thought. The Belgian is understood to have seen Ramon Cugat, the doctor based in Barcelona to whom Pep Guardiola sends all of his injured players, and De Bruyne ‘has been given the go-ahead to continue his rehab’, according to the report.
