There was a night of festivities for the good and great of world football in London on Monday night. FIFA handed out a raft of awards at The Best and there were plenty of deserving winners. Plus also some curious awards as well. As always, questions are being asked of FIFA this evening.
The Egyptian King bagged the 2018 Puskas Award for his Premier League goal for Liverpool against Everton. Many wondered how Salah won the best goal of the year award considering Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale scored memorable overhead kicks as Real Madrid won the Champions League.
The FIFPro World XI:
David de Gea
Dani Alves,
Raphael Varane,
Sergio Ramos,
Marcelo
Luka Modric,
N’Golo Kante
Lionel Messi,
Kylian Mbappe
Cristiano Ronaldo
Luka Modric wins men’s player of the year Other winners on the night included Didier Deschamps as men’s coach of the year and Marta as Women’s Player of the Year. Breaking the duopoly of Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric won men’s player of the year. The feat of guiding Croatia to the World Cup final is one that will live long in the memory and Modric was suitably humble on winning the award.
Mo Salah won the Puskas Award for a goal Messi scores every other week.
Messi was left out of the final three, but made the FIFA World XI.
De Gea was in the World XI but didn’t win goalkeeper of the year.
Salah was named among the final three best players, but didn’t make the World XI.
