Wales defeated the Republic of Ireland 4-1 in their UEFA Nations League opener in what was a dream start for the 44-year-old. Goals from Tom Lawrence, Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Connor Roberts sealed an emphatic win at Cardiff City Stadium. It helps having a player of Bale’s quality in the team. The Real Madrid star has never shied away from expressing just how much he enjoys playing for his country - and he can always be counted on to deliver.
The 29-year-old became the first player in history to score 30 goals for Wales with a tremendous left-footed strike in the first half. It’s potentially a very exciting time for Welsh football, then. A number of young players are breaking into the senior squad and it will be interesting to see how they progress under Giggs.
One who caught the eye against Ireland is Chelsea’s versatile 17-year-old Ethan Ampadu. Ampadu shone in midfield, producing a performance that belied his years, and provided the assist for Ramsey’s goal.

Ampadu bossed proceedings in Cardiff, and his performance didn’t escape the attention of Chelsea fans. Ampadu was handed his opportunity under Antonio Conte - he made seven first-team appearances last season - and Blues supporters believes Maurizio Sarri has to utilise him this campaign.
Opportunities for youth players at Stamford Bridge are pretty hard to come by. But where Ampadu is concerned, Chelsea could have a future star.
