AGAINST all odds, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has formally announced his movement to Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. He also announced that he has forwarded his resignation letter from the APC to the council ward. The announcement followed the resistance of some youths who stopped him from travelling to Abuja for the meeting with Comrade Adams Oshiomole scheduled to settle the rift between Senator George Akume and himself.
The governor made the declaration while meeting with local government chairmen and their councillors at the new banquet hall of government house, Makurdi. Thirteen out of the twenty-three local government areas and 276 councillors were in the meeting convened by the governor. Ortom who commended the intervention of the national leaders of APC, however, explained that he needed to move because the state chapter of the party which had during the state congress applauded him for his performance in the past three years have turned to launch an attack on him. “This morning, I had wanted to go to Abuja to attend the meeting but some youths in the state refused, they asked me to go back. “But let me formally inform this gathering that I have forwarded my resignation letter from the APC to the chairman of my council ward and he has promised to join me in the new party. As he was announcing his resignation from APC, the governor also displayed a copy of the resignation letter to the people. He further said, ‘as I talk to you, ten (10) out of seventeen (17) state lawmakers of All Progressives Congress, APC, are ready to follow me to the new party. “May I formally announce to you that I have formally moved to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,” governor Ortom declared.
Earlier, some council chairmen and leaders of the legislative council in attendance promised to follow the governor to the new party to ensure his re-election aspiration.
