Roman Abramovich has reportedly scrapped £1billion plans to redevelop Chelsea’s stadium — because ‘he is unwilling to invest in a country where he can’t work’. The Russian billionaire, 51, has also revoked his own visa application as he is tired of waiting for one, according to reports. Israeli sources claim the steel and oil magnate ripped up his visa request recently, fed up of being treated as a ‘new applicant’. Mr Abramovich has declined to comment on the claims. The dad-of-seven became the owner of the companies that control Chelsea in June 2003. Since then, he has pumped billions into the west London club.

In a statement released today, The Blues said: ‘Chelsea Football Club announces today that it has put its new stadium project on hold. No further pre-construction design and planning work will occur. ‘The club does not have a time frame set for reconsideration of its decision. ‘The decision was made due to the current unfavourable investment climate.’
