The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for Jose Mourinho to end the campaign with a trophy. In Jose Mourinho’s first season last year, the Red Devils picked up a few pieces of silverware, but their campaign has been markedly less successful this term.
That being said, they’ve grown in the Premier League, and for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, they finished second in the English top flight. An FA Cup win, then, would cap things off nicely. Mourinho, though, must pick the right team to counter Chelsea, who on their day are an impressive offensive and defensive outfit. Below, using buidlineup.com, we’ve detailed the team that we think Mourinho should select to hand a blow to his rival Antonio Conte on Saturday. Between the sticks, David De Gea is a natural and obvious choice. He’s been the best goalkeeper in the Premier League this season by some distance, and it’s fair to say that if he has a bad day, Man Utd could seriously struggle – particularly with the form that Olivier Giroud is in. In defence, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia have emerged as Mourinho’s primary choices, and given the nature of this game, their experience will be crucial. A slight change may come in through the middle, with Eric Bailly – who hasn’t played much lately – likely required to capably deal with the likes of Eden Hazard and Giroud. Alongside him, Jones is Mourinho’s best option, though he’s hardly the strongest man in this team. The midfield will be crucial, as it’s arguably the strongest facet of Chelsea’s team. Cesc Fabregas pulls the strings, N’Golo Kante defends fantastically, and on his day Tiemoue Bakayoko provides fantastic strength and pace through the middle. Nemanja Matic, then, will likely be tasked with countering that defensively, whilst the onus will be on Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera to bulk out the midfield and pull the strings going forward.
In the attack, if fit, Romelu Lukaku must lead the line as he has been deadly this season. Alexis Sanchez’s form has been mixed this season, but he’s the sort of player that will come to life in a cup final, whilst Jesse Lingard has enjoyed the best season of his career thus far. If Man Utd’s core players perform well, Chelsea will be unable to resist, especially given their poor recent form, but Mourinho must get his preparation correct for that to be the case.
