Jose Mourinho has told Manchester United fans it will ‘not be the end of the world’ if Manchester City win the Premier League title on derby day. City need a victory at the Etihad on Saturday evening to be crowned champions, and Mourinho has promised to try and delay the celebration so United supporters don’t have to witness it. But the Old Trafford boss reminded them that he clinched his second title at Chelsea by beating United in 2006, and it did not spell disaster for the club. ‘Look, I won the title at Chelsea against Manchester United,’ said Mourinho. ‘We beat United 3-0 and we won the title at Stamford Bridge in 2005-06. ‘But it was not the end of the world. Manchester United didn’t finish. It was just football. ‘The only thing I can say is that we want to win. We don’t want to offer them the game. ‘It’s normal that you want to delay the champions becoming champions. We would like to beat them and we would like Tottenham to beat them next week. We would like them to be champions as late as possible. ‘That is normal in football. But in this case, obviously they are going to be champions because there is a very significant (points) difference.’ It is not the first time Mourinho has referenced his own previous success against United to try and ease their disappointment, having mentioned his Champions League wins at Old Trafford with Porto and Real Madrid in the wake of last month’s European exit at the hands of Sevilla. The Portuguese coach was reluctant to heap praise on his old rival Pep Guardiola just yet, but admitted that City deserve to be champions. He also expects them to break Chelsea’s record Premier League points total of 95, set in his first season in England in 2004-05. ‘The moment they become champions, which will be sooner rather than later, I will react the same way that other people reacted when I won three titles in this country. ‘City will be champions because they deserve to be champions. The table is always the reflection of the season. ‘Sometimes you have one team that was unlucky with injuries, another who was lucky because they had no injuries and no suspensions, another one had a few more points because of some referee mistakes. ‘But I don’t go in this direction because it belongs to the season. Every team in the course of the season had some injuries, someone suspended and referee mistakes that helped or punished you. ‘In the end, what matters is what happens in the reality of the points. ‘I think they are going to beat Chelsea’s total from 2004-05, and that does not make it easy for the teams coming behind them – even for teams with positive seasons. ‘In our case, I think we have eight points more than last season, more goals scored, less goals conceded, but Manchester City made it impossible for the others.’
