Jack Wilshere has returned to the England setup for the first time since the disastrous Euro 2016 campaign, where the Three Lions were dumped out by Iceland. The Arsenal midfielder has struggled for fitness since England’s ill-fated trip to France and went on loan to Bournemouth in order to return to top form. After returning to the Emirates in the summer, Wilshere is now enjoying a stint in the Arsenal side and has been rewarded with a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s squad for the pre-World Cup fixtures. Arsenal legend Martin Keown believes Wilshere’s inclusion in the World Cup squad is essential and he tipped the 26-year-old to be a starter in Russia. He told the Daily Mail: ‘Gareth Southgate does not have too many top-class midfielders to choose from. Jack Wilshere should start at the World Cup.
‘While Arsenal are having a disappointing season, Jack is coming into really good form. ‘The Europa League has helped him more than any other player, giving him time to build his match fitness and the chance to break into Arsenal’s first team. Hopefully he can do the same for England. ‘I had sympathy for Jack at Euro 2016. He had hardly kicked a ball for Arsenal before the tournament and was lacking match sharpness. ‘This summer is a great opportunity for him to shine at a tournament with a clean bill of health.’
