THE Registrar and Chief Executive of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, has disclosed that about 550,357 candidates out the 1.7 million that registered for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in 2017, have so far been offered admissions. He also disclosed that a total of 1,662,762 candidates registered for the 2018 UTME, a little less than the number of candidates that registered for the examination last year. Oloyede, made this known on Wednesday in Abuja while briefing newsmen on the readiness of the Board for the smooth conduct of 2018 UTME, scheduled to hold from 9th to 19th of March, 2018 in all the 605 Computer Based Centres (CBT) nationwide. He said a total of 367 blind candidates registered to sit for the 2018 UTME as against the 201 last year, stressing that the Board would continue to provide all necessary support and logistics to the physically challenged candidates for them to attain their educational pursuit. He explained that the Board has since concluded the 2017 admission exercise, using the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) which automated the admission platform and provided the candidates with the opportunity to track their admissions. He added that the system ensured strict adherence to admission guidelines, thereby, creating equity and fairness in admission and was responsible for timely completion of the admission exercise. He said: “The 2017 admissions statistics show that 1,840,225 candidates applied for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and Direct Entry (DE). “A total of 1,187,997 candidates out of the above met the minimum cut-off points for the 2017 admission exercise of which 842,505 possess the minimum O’level requirement and cut-off points (Net Qualified Applicants),” he said. The JAMB boss said it was out of this net qualified candidates that about 550,357 candidates have been offered admissions into various tertiary institutions across the country noting however that a few Colleges of Education and Polytechnics were yet to complete their admission processes because of extension by the Board for them. He further noted that a total number of 1,662,762 candidates registered for the 2018 UTME within a period of two months as against a total of 1,718,425 candidates who registered within one month (with an extension of two weeks). “The figure for 2018 shows a decrease of 55,642) applicants when compared with last year’s figure of 1,718,425) representing a decrease of 3.2 %. “Findings also revealed that the drop in the number of candidates for this year’s UTME is largely due to measures put in place by the Board to forestall multiple registrations and other unwholesome registration practices by candidates,” Oloyede said. He warned parents, candidates and owners of the CBT centres against involvement in examination malpractice, saying anyone caught would be prosecuted in the law court.
He through research, the Board has discovered a number of items that aid examination malpractices and has included them in the banned items from the venue of examination. He listed the items to include: watches, cameras, recorders, calculators, microphones, spy glasses, cell phones, ear-pieces, ink/ pen readers, smart lenses, smart rings/ jewellery, smart buttons, Bluetooth devices and storage devices among others. “Consequently, all officials, CBT owners and candidates are hereby warned not to bring any of the above-banned items into the examination venues as ignorance would not be taken as a defence. “Any official, CBT operator and candidate caught will be handed over to security agencies for an appropriate sanction,” he warned. He noted that officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members would be deployed to various centres across the country to monitor the conduct of the examination as well watch over the activities of JAMB officials. He added that about 6500 permanent and ad-hoc staff were deployed for this examination saying each of the 605 examination centres is to be manned by 10 officials, including NSCDC, NYSC, and Chief Examiners among others. The Register also warned the universities hosting examination centres against disruption of the exercise, threatening to blacklist any institution that failed to ensure orderly conduct of the UTME. The warning was against the backdrop of the incident at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife, where the striking non-teaching staff of the University disrupted the conduct of mock UTME last week. He expressed deep worry by the incessant cases of candidates being defrauded by syndicates, saying during the registration period, with the cooperation of the security agencies, some of these syndicates were arrested. On application by the state of origin, the Registrar said Imo state led the chart by 92890 candidates followed by Oyo 86695, Osun 86044 and Ogun 80371 candidates.
