After a defeat against Manchester City – no surprises there — Newcastle United have another tough fixture coming up against Chelsea. The Blues will be hurting after their defeat against Arsenal in the League Cup semi-final which means the FA Cup could be their only realistic hope of winning silverware (Alas, they play Barcelona in the Champions League). Rafa Benitez made a few surprising changes to the lineup before the City game, and could once again rest a few key players as the midweek clash against Burnley at home will be higher on his list. New signing Kenedy won’t be able to feature, which is a bit of a blow as Benitez will want him to play as many games as possible to successfully integrate him into the starting XI. Here’s how the Magpies might line up for the game:
Defence
Freddie Woodman’s error led to Luton’s goal in the FA Cup third round game apart from that, he had a sound performance. However, Rob Elliot is back and he is likely to get the nod. Massadio Haidara could get a chance in the left-back role as Paul Dummett could be given a breather. Javier Manquillo was preferred over DeAndre Yedlin, so the latter could return to the starting XI and play as the right-back. Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark could start at the heart of the defence as Benitez’s resources in that position are a bit stretched. Florian Lejeune and Chancel Mbemba are still out.
Midfield
Mikel Merino is could feature against the Blues. The Spaniard’s passing from the midfield will be a big asset and his composure is something that was missed against Manchester City. Jonjo Shelvey could keep his place as the duo of Isaac Hayden and Mo Diame could be given a breather. Ayoze Perez didn’t start against Man City and could play behind the striker against Chelsea.
Attack
Jacob Murphy and Matt Ritchie could start on the wings. Murphy tends to play on the right and his pace could stretch the Chelsea defence. Ritchie’s deliveries will be key if the Magpies are to get a draw or a win. Dwight Gayle’s finishing has let him down on more than one occasion and the fans will hope he can be more prolific come Sunday as he is likely to be given the nod over Joselu.
