IGBO apex organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo yesterday insisted that Nigeria must be restructured for it to move foward. The group insisted that the status quo in Nigeria can only lead to resentment, disaffection and agitations by various ethnic groups that make up the country. President-General of the group, Barr Nnia Nwodo stated this while addressing a cross section of Igbos in the United States. He also condemned the re-instatement of the killer police officer who masterminded the killing of six Igbo traders at Apo village in Abuja some years ago, noting that it was a crime against humanity for the Federal Goverment to encourage such evil re-instatement instead of prosecuting the officers.
“It is a very dangerous precedence that has been set in this country,” he noted. On restructuring, he said: “The restructuring of Nigeria will better the lives of all Nigerians contrary to the view of those who want the status quo to remain. The meaning of restructuring is not ambigous as the revisionists claim. It implies the tinkering of the fiscal, structural and physical paradigms of Nigeria to give all sections a sense of belonging.” Meantime, the Lagos state chapter of Ohanaeze has been taken over by the national headquarters of the organisation after the expiration of the tenure of the former EXCO of the body on the November 27, 2017. A statement signed by Mr Chuks Ibegbu, National Deputy Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze said, the NEC of the organisation from its headquarters in Enugu would soon storm Lagos to organise a stakeholders meeting and conduct an all inclusive election of the Lagos State chapter of the body. The statement warned any body, or persons claiming to have been purportedly elected into a non existent EXCO of the Lagos State chapter of Ohanaeze by the outgone regime to desist from doing so in his, or their own interests. The statement also noted that the United Nations Secretary-General through his Special envoy in West Africa, Ibn Chambers has congratulated Ohanaeze Ndigbo for its role in calming the tension in the country some months ago. The United Nations lauded Ndigbo for their industry, and developmental stride and appealed to the group to continue to build bridges with other sections of Nigeia in a bid to build a better and more cohesive nation.
