It seems that talk of the Gunners’ demise has been somewhat premature, with a comprehensive 5-0 demolition of Huddersfield in midweek helping to keep Arsene Wenger’s charges within striking distance of second position. Manchester United currently occupy that spot, four points ahead of the North London outfit, though Jose Mourinho’s men will need help from elsewhere if they are to close the eight-point gap on runaway leaders and local rivals Manchester City. Although they won at Vicarage Road on Tuesday night, the Red Devils’ away form hasn’t been anything to write home about in recent months, with just three wins from their previous 11 top-flight trips representing a paltry return for such a giant of the global game.
Arsenal, by way of contrast, have been simply sensational on their own patch, enjoying 12 consecutive victories in which they have outscored their opponents by 31 goals to five, so our Kickoff predictive algorithm understandably makes them 50% favourites to come out on top. Meetings between major clubs can often be tight affairs, with under 2.5 goals (54% chance) expected at the Emirates Stadium in a contest in which 1-0 (12% chance) and 1-1 (12% chance) are seen as the most likely scorelines.
Alexis Sanchez (14% chance) has been back amongst the goals recently, finding the net against Tottenham, Burnley and Huddersfield, so the Chilean international starts amongst the favourites to open the scoring here, along with Olivier Giroud (14% chance) and Romelu Lukaku (15% chance).
