Muhammad Ibn Chambas, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for West Africa and Sahel, says the global body firmly believes in the oneness of Nigeria. Chambas said this in Sokoto on Tuesday when he visited Gov. Aminu Tambuwal at the Government House. ‘‘The peace and unity of Nigeria is very important to the global community, as such, we commend efforts aimed at promoting peace in the country. ‘‘Let me applaud the work done by the Gen.
Abdulsalami Abubakar-led Peace Committee, especially during the transition period in 2015. ‘‘So, as the next election circle approaches, we expect others to play similar or related roles in ensuring peace and stability,’’ he said. Chambas said UN system in Nigeria would continue to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure the nation’s peace and sustainable development. He also stated that the UN would continue to support home-grown solutions that would lead to deepening of peace and stability in all parts of the nation.
In his remarks, Tambuwal sought support from leading international organisations for end to proliferation of small arms, not just in Nigeria, but also in all conflict-prone areas of the world. The governor commended Chambas for his concern about peace in the country. He said as someone who had spent large part of his working life in Nigeria, Chambas had become a stakeholder in the Nigerian project. The governor appealed to the envoy to support Sokoto State in key areas like agriculture, development of small and medium scale industries, education and health.
