The Chelsea defender found himself in the headlines earlier this month when Antonio Conte opted to drop him for the Blues’ home clash against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge before the international break. Luiz was left out of the squad completely as Conte’s side secured a 1-0 Premier League victory over the Red Devils in front of their home fans. The move was reported to have come after the defender questioned Conte’s tactics in the build-up to the game, but the Brazilian has since returned to training at the west London club’s Cobham base in recent days. However, former journalist McGarry claims that Chelsea owner Abramovich won’t be happy about Conte’s latest move to drop Luiz, because the defender is one of his favourite players.

Speaking on the Transfer Window podcast, McGarry said: “David Luiz was returned to Chelsea because he’s one of Roman Abramovich’s favourite players. “He was not neccassarily the choice of anyone at the club on the coaching staff. “He’s loved by the owner of the club who saw him as the long-term successor to John Terry as captain of the club, and the fact Gary Cahill remains as captain instead of Luiz is still the matter of debate in Roman Abramovich’ box every second weekend when they play at home. “That was two fingers to Roman Abramovich by dropping him from the squad completely.” Luiz could be set to make his return to the first team for Chelsea when the Blues travel to West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon. The west London side head into the game looking to close the gap to leaders Manchester City, who are currently nine points ahead of Conte’s men after 11 matches of the new campaign.
