Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte, has said that it is not his place to convince Thibaut Courtois to sign a new contract at the club. Courtois is set to enter the final year of his current deal at Stamford Bridge. Real Madrid are keenly monitoring the Belgian goalkeeper’s situation at Chelsea, with reports suggesting he rejected an initial offer in May. Courtois himself says he is is happy to postpone talks over a lucrative extension to his contract, which expires in June 2019, until later in the season as he focuses on performing for the Blues on the pitch.
“I must be honest: I think this question is for the club, not for me,” Conte said of Courtois. “I like to also give my opinion about technical decisions [internally] but it is also important for the club to face this issue, this contract [negotiation] with Courtois. “I can tell you he is one of the best, maybe the best goalkeeper in the world and he is a very important player for Chelsea, but the renewal of the contract is a task for the club.”
