EXCLUSIVE: THE European Union must intervene in the Catalonia independence crisis to force Madrid to negotiate amid fears of violence as Spain is plunged into chaos, a leading professor has warned. The EU has been repeatedly criticised for its stance over the Catalonia crisis but academics have warned if the Spanish government is to negotiate with Catalonia over independence it will require a substantial intervention from EU leaders. According to Dr Sally-Ann Kitts, senior lecturer in Hispanic and Catalan Studies at the University of Bristol, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s Madrid government will refuse to compromise on a united Spain without significant international pressure. Dr Kitts told Express.co.uk it will take “substantial European pressure” to get Mr Rajoy around the negotiating table and Brussels may be forced to intervene.
She said: “I realise the EU is in a very difficult position - although I do think that not condemning the violence was a really big mistake and quite shameful - but nonetheless they have to recognise that
this situation is not going to go away.
Just saying that this is an internal affair is not going to cut it. In the end they need to persuade Rajoy and his government that at some point they do need to sit down and talk.” Dr Kitts said the Spanish PM, in addition to many within Spain’s parliament and senate, is unable to conceive of Spain as anything but united and indivisible.
She said: “For them Spain is one, united, and can never change. They refuse to recognise any other scenario. “The reality is there are other scenarios, and other people just don’t agree with the central government. They are going to have to face up to that at some point.
