Pyongyang was told to abandoned its nuclear programme by assembled defence officials from the United States, South Korea and Japan. A statement said: "Together they called upon North Korea to refrain from irresponsible provocations that aggravate regional tensions, and to walk away from its destructive and reckless path of development.” The meeting saw American Staff General Joseph Dunford welcomed South Korea’s and Japan’s defence chiefs to US Pacific Command.
North Korea’s recent ballistic missile and nuclear test were discussed at the meeting. The meeting comes ahead of a planned Asia tour by President Donald Trump which has been seen North Korea flood Seoul with propaganda. Insults delivered to the South Korean capital by balloon branded the US President “mentally ill”.
The White House said: “The President’s engagements will strengthen the international resolve to confront the North Korean threat and ensure the complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.” The US has deployed nuclear bombers to the Pacific ahead of the Asia tour. The nuclear-fitted B-2 bombers travelled to the region as US Defence Secretary James Mattis declared the US would not “accept North Korea as a nuclear power”.
