Clinton blasts Trump handling of North Korea as ‘picking fights with Kim makes him smile'

Mrs Clinton’s comment comes as Kim Jong-un and President Trump have been locked in a war of words, with both sides threatening to “totally destroy” the other. The former Secretary of State did not mention Trump by name, but said: ”Picking fights with Kim Jong-un puts a smile on his face.” Mrs Clinton also warned that "cavalier" threats to start war on the Korean Peninsula are "dangerous and short-sighted".

She added: ”There is no need for us to be bellicose and aggressive over North Korea.” Last month Trump told the United Nations that the US was prepared to totally destroy North Korea if necessary. The former first lady also indirectly referred to Trump's insults towards North Korea on Twitter, saying "the insults on Twitter have benefited North Korea, I don't think they've benefited the United States". North Korea yesterday described the situation on the Korean Peninsula as “on the threshold of a nuclear disaster”.

The nation’s deputy UN ambassador Kim In Ryong warned tensions had “reached the touch-and-go point and a nuclear war may break out any moment”. And Mrs Clinton said Washington's allies have increasingly been expressing concerns over the reliability of the US. Speaking at a forum in Seoul, she stressed the need for greater pressure on North Korea and diplomacy to bring Pyongyang to talks. Mrs Clinton also called on China to take a "more out front role" in enforcing sanctions against North Korea in a bid to put an end to the rogue state’s missile and nuclear development.

It comes as photos have emerged of new construction in China, which experts believe could be part of a contingency plan to invade North Korea or amass the nation’s huge army on their shared border amid World War 3 fears.
