BREAKING: Fayemi wins Ekiti gubernatorial election

• July 15, 2018Nicholas Ibekwe With victory in 12 out of the 16 local government areas of Ekiti State, the candidate of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) Kayode Fayemi, has effectively won the Ekiti governorship election.
  His closest challenger is the Peoples Democratic Party’s Kolapo Olushola who won in four local governments. Mr Olusola is the incumbent deputy governor of the state and was hoping to succeed his boss, Ayodele Fayose, who had campaigned vigorously for him. The results of the election mark a remarkable rebound for Mr Fayemi, who as the incumbent governor, was roundly defeated four years ago by Mr Fayose. Though the election was generally peaceful across the state, there was large-scale vote-buying by supporters of both political parties. There were also few cases of ballot box snatching. Mr Fayemi is now set to be declared winner of the election by the elecotral commission, INEC.
  The results of the 16 local governments have been officially announced by INEC, which is however, still doing the final collation.

Chief ibori is dead

Chief Williams Ibori, the former Unugbrogo of Oghara kingdom, Delta State has died.

Chief Ibori was the elder brother of a former Governor of the state, James Ibori. He reportedly passed away very early Thursday morning. Reacting to the news of Ibori’s death, Olorogun Williams Makinde, the Managing Director /CEO of Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, described the late High Chief William Ibori, the Unugbrogodo of Ogharefe Oguedion, as a bridge builder. In a press statement through his Personal Assistant on media, Comrade Owen .O. Edafe, Olorogun Williams Makinde said, “I received, with profound grief, the news of the passage‎ to eternal glory of High Chief William Ibori, the Unugbrogodo of Ogharefe Oguedion elder brother to our national leader and mentor Chief James Onanefe Ibori. “Late High Chief William Ibori was an exemplary leader and father who was highly revered and respected across the State because of his love for peace and knack for conflict resolution. He was indeed a peace-loving father figure, a stabilising force and courageous bridge builder who devoted so much energy to not only bringing communities closer but also ensuring rancour-free politicking by uniting politicians of divergent principles and proclivities. “He was in a class of his own as a cultural aficionado; a devotee of his people’s tradition, who gave so much of himself in serving as the Unugbrogodo of Ogharefe Oguedion.

“He also acquitted himself as a highly principled elder statesman and a High Ranking chief of Oghara kingdom, who remained committed to the cause for Delta state unity, growth and renaissance. “He will indeed be missed by we, his family, the good people of the great Oghara Kingdom and Delta State.”

Breaking news :PDP leaders storm National Assembly, protest attack on Fayose just few days ago

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Uche Secondus, has led the National Working Committee of the party to the National Assembly to protest against the alleged assault by men of the Nigeria Police on the Gover‎nor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose.

Also at the protest, which held at the main gate to the National Assembly Complex was a former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara; former Minister of Health, Prof. ABC Nwosu; a former National Woman Leader, Josephine Anenih; and former Majority Leader of the Senate, Mulikat Akande-Adeola, among others. The protesters, who were received by Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, demanded a free, fair and credible governorship election in Ekiti on Saturday.

PRESIDENT BUHARI: I'm a slower reader

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has given ammunition to critics who call him "Baba Go-slow" after admitting that he failed to sign a continental free-trade agreement because he is a "slow reader".

Mr Buhari said he intends to sign the agreement, reached by African leaders at a summit in Rwanda in March, soon. “In trying to guarantee employment, goods and services in our country, we have to be careful with agreements that will compete, maybe successfully, against our upcoming industries,” Mr Buhari said at a news conference on Wednesday, Reuters news agency reports. “I am a slow reader, maybe because I was an ex-soldier. I didn’t read it fast enough before my officials saw that it was all right for signature. I kept it on my table. I will soon sign it,” he added. Mr Buhari was speaking during a visit to Nigeria by South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa. Mr Ramaphosa had earlier told Nigerian business leaders that South Africa saw huge benefits from the continental free trade deal and that a draft agreement relating to the movement of people was being reviewed.

This was Mr Ramaphosa's first visit to Nigeria since he became president in February. He said South Africa wanted closer relations with Nigeria. The two countries have the biggest economies in Africa.

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, said it was surprised by the decision of the Governors of the South-East to reject ranching.

The organization on Wednesday said the rejection was shocking.

The South-East leader of MACBAN, Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, stated this in a press statement in Awka, Anambra State.

Siddiki said in the statement that the group least expected such decision from the Igbo who he described as “the major bonding elements among the people of Nigeria.” He added, “It was surprising to us considering the cordial relationship that had existed in the zone between us and the state governments.” According to him, the Miyetti Allah had never failed to appreciate the commitment of the host governors in ensuring the safety of his members. The South-East Governors’ Forum had at a meeting in Enugu on Sunday unanimously agreed not to donate land for ranching in the zone. But Siddiki in his statement said the governors’ decision did not show exemplary leadership. He said, ”It is our candid view that the South-East whose citizens are the major bonding elements among the people of Nigeria would provide exemplary leadership in accommodating other Nigerians in their midst. “It is evident that our organisation’s advocacy for peaceful coexistence among indigenous farmers and herdsmen is increasingly making successes in the South-East. “This explains our surprise at the latest stand of the governors which would not only frustrate our people from carrying out our legitimate livestock rearing business in this part but might be suggestive of a kind of suspicion that might undermine the mutuality of the claim of brotherhood.

“We are mindful of the various negotiations and consultations still going on in respect of the contentious issues of ranching, colonies and grazing areas across the country, we are hopeful that these issues are considered dispassionately in the interest of Nigeria and the generality of its citizens.”
